ARCHITECTS AND TOWN CENTER COMMITTEE UPDATE
The Town Center Committee and Jackson & Ryan Architects are meeting weekly to discuss the selection of the general contractor for the new city hall. Geotechnical testing will occur in September.
SHRED-IT AND HEAVY TRASH COLLECTION DAY / OCTOBER 25
On October 25, the City of Southside Place will conduct Heavy Trash/Shred-It Day for residents. Residents can bring up to 5 bankers boxes of personal records to city hall for free shredding between the hours of 9 AM - 12 PM. Heavy trash pick-up starts at 8 A.M.
BELLAIRE BOULEVARD CONSTRUCTION REPORT - CHANGE ORDER
During the next three months, the contractor will continue reconstruction of the eastbound lanes to the railroad tracks in order to reduce the overall project by 5 months.
WATER LINE CONSTRUCTION NEARLY COMPLETE IN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
The $ 1.2 Million residential water line project from Carlon to University is nearly complete. New PVC lines have replaced 50+ year old 6" and 2" cast iron pipes. If you are having trouble with your sprinkler system or need new sod, please contact city staff during the remainder of August and September. Thank you for your patience during this six month improvement event!
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7th
Please join your neighbors outside for the 25th Anniversary of National Night Out. Public safety personnel will be visiting block parties that evening. Contact the police department for block party registration.
RECYCLING WEDNESDAY
Wednesday is RECYCLING DAY. Please place items curbside by 8:00 A.M. All plastics are being collected curbside. Please do not drop pet waste into the recycle bags. Plastic (All Numbers), Glass, Paper, Metal, and Aluminum Cans are Welcome
SCHOOL HAS STARTED!!
Please Drive Safely in School Zones. In addition, the City of West University Place cell phone ban is in effect along University Boulevard.
USAGE OF SANITATION BAGS FOR COLLECTION AT THE CURB
Please remember to use the black heavy-duty bags for your sanitation purposes instead of garbage cans. These black bags are provided to citizens once every two years. If you need additional bags, they may be purchased at city hall.
2008 PRELIMINARY TAX RATES
Preliminary debt tax rates for residential and commercial properties will increase several cents due to the recent water/sewer certificate of obligations for infrastructure improvements and the November, 2007 bond election concerning the clubhouse purchase and new city hall. The 2007 tax rate was
$ .25136 per$ 100 valuation. City staff is anticipating final appraisal values in late September.
COMMERCIAL DISTRICT REPORT
A Southside Place Nail Salon is expected to open soon at the former Venetian Bistro next to Terlingua Border Café and Parker Uniforms.
EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Police and administrative offices have more than a dozen 2008 information packets on hurricane preparedness. Maps of the Gulf of Mexico are available for families to track any potential storms.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT
Police and Fire Department Personnel look forward to visiting neighbors during the October 7 National Night Out Event in Southside Place.
In February, the annual residential hamburger and hotdog supper at the clubhouse will take place also.
POLICE DEPARTMENT BIKE PATROL PROGRAM
Officer Keith Hrachovy is patrolling the residential streets on bike during the week in coordination with car patrols.
NEW POLICE DEPARTMENT TRADING CARDS COMING SOON
Beginning in January, new police department trading cards will be available for residents. Officer Keith Hrachovy and Dispatcher Milagro Cuellar have recently joined the Southside Place public safety staff.
CLEANING UP AFTER PETS REDUCES HEALTH RISKS
Please pick up pet waste on sidewalks, streets, and grassy areas.
WATER/SEWER RATE ANALYSIS
During the next several months, city staff and a consultant will be reviewing residential and commercial utility rates within the region. A recommendation as to an increase in these rates is expected in December.
2009 BUDGET PREPARATION
During the month of September, city council and staff will be working together to finalize annual revenue and expenditures for the upcoming year.
