July/August Community Newsletter HOUSEWATCH PROGRAM Please contact the police department if you are leaving for the July 4th weekend. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Information packets on hurricane preparedness can be picked up at city hall or the police station. Maps of the Gulf of Mexico are available for families to track any potential storms. A Family Hurricane Checklist is essential during this time of year. SOUTHSIDE PLACE MOSQUITO SPRAYING EFFORTS The City of Southside Place has started its regular spraying for mosquitoes. Standing water and warm temperatures are the perfect conditions for hatching mosquitoes. The city is spraying on Monday and Thursday after 10 P.M. FIREWORKS ARE ILLEGAL Please remember that fireworks are illegal in Southside Place. JULY 4th BIKE PARADE The Southside Place Bike parade will start in front of City Hall and proceed to the park. Fun activities including food and games at the park will follow. SOUTHSIDE PLACE CELEBRATES SEVENTY-FIVE YEARS: 1934-2009 Please join your fellow residents and neighbors for birthday cake in honor of the city's 75th anniversary. Seventy-five years of history including old pictures, historical documents, 1934 raffle tickets, and residential directories will be on display. The August 3rd celebration will be at the clubhouse from 6:30-8:00 PM. Families stay in Southside Place SEWER PLANT UPGRADES STARTING IN AUGUST The largest wastewater plant improvement project since 1986 will begin in 45 days. The city owned sewer plant is located on Bellaire Boulevard. The infrastructure project is funded by the 2007 Certificate of Obligation Debt Issue and will cost $ 1,000,000. NEW RESIDENTIAL SEWER LINE TO BE CONSTRUCTED ON EDLOE Construction of a new 8" sewer line from University to Garnet along Edloe will start within 90 days. This new line replaces a 50+ year old cast iron pipe. The total project cost will be $ 100,000. If you have any questions or comments about this infrastructure project, please contact city staff. SOUTHSIDE PLACE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT NEWS The City of Southside Place would like to thank Shell for their MDA matching funds. Fire department personnel are being fitted for new bunker gear as a result of a recent FEMA grant award. 2009 PRELIMINARY TAX VALUES Preliminary tax values for residential and commercial properties in the city total $ 496 Million compared to $ 483 Million last year. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT ON AUGUST 4 Public safety personnel will be visiting block parties that evening. Southside Place will also be celebrating the Texas Night Out on October 6. POLICE DEPARTMENT SERVICE AWARDS Thank you for your years of service to the City of Southside Place Police Chief Lonnie Bernhardt 15 Years Dispatcher Brian Cavanagh 10 Years Patrolman James Kelly 10 Years City Manager David Moss 10 Years Patrolman Clayton Williams 10 Years BELLAIRE BOULEVARD CONSTRUCTION REPORT (FINAL PHASE) During the next few months, the final phase of the eighteen month long Bellaire Boulevard roadway project will be completed. Construction is between Auden and Edloe at the present time. New traffic signal and pedestrian lights have been installed at Auden, Stella Link, and Academy. Paver pedestrian walkways have been installed at Academy and Stella Link. Walkway pavers and a new entrance logo will be designed at Auden. A separate project for additional pedestrian lighting, new trees, and landscaping will begin in January, 2010 along the roadway. COMMERCIAL DISTRICT REPORT On June 1st, Metro introduced a new Quickline bus route along Bellaire Boulevard and other service areas. Metro has recently submitted plans for a new transit station at the intersection of Stella Link near CVS Pharmacy. PLEASE HAVE A SAFE AND JOYFUL SUMMER!
